Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors: physics and applications

چکیده
Single-photon detectors based on superconducting nanowires (SSPDs or SNSPDs) have rapidly emerged as a highly promising photon-counting technology for infrared wavelengths. These devices offer high efficiency, low dark counts and excellent timing resolution. In this review, we consider the basic SNSPD operating principle and models of device behaviour. We give an overview of the evolution of SNSPD device design and the improvements in performance which have been achieved. We also evaluate device limitations and noise mechanisms. We survey practical refrigeration technologies and optical coupling schemes for SNSPDs. Finally we summarize promising application areas, ranging from quantum cryptography to remote sensing. Our goal is to capture a detailed snapshot of an emerging superconducting detector technology on the threshold of maturity. (Some figures may appear in colour only in the online journal)

Single-photon detectors based on ultranarrow superconducting nanowires.
We report efficient single-photon detection (η = 20% at 1550 nm wavelength) with ultranarrow (20 and 30 nm wide) superconducting nanowires, which were shown to be more robust to constrictions and more responsive to 1550 nm wavelength photons than standard superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, based on 90 nm wide nanowires. We also improved our understanding of the physics of superco...

We investigated the timing jitter of superconducting nanowire avalanche photodetectors (SNAPs, also referred to as cascade-switching superconducting single-photon detectors) based on 30-nm-wide nanowires. At bias currents (IB) near the switching current, SNAPs showed sub-35-ps FWHM Gaussian jitter similar to standard 100-nm-wide superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors. At lower values ...
متن کاملSuperconducting Nanowire Single photon detector (SNSPD) for Quantum Information
In the beginning of this century, a new type of detector, superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD or SSPD) joined the family of superconducting sensors and detectors. Soon, it has been turning to be one of the most important players in this family since it surpasses the semiconducting single photon detectors (APD: avalanche photodiode and PMT: photo multiplier tube) with many adv...

متن کاملTiming Performance of Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors
Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are becoming increasingly popular for applications in quantum information and long-distance communication. While the detection efficiency of SNSPDs has significantly improved over time, their timing performance has largely remained unchanged. Furthermore, the photodetection process in superconducting nanowires is still not fully understo...
متن کاملControlling a superconducting nanowire single- photon detector using tailored bright illumination
We experimentally demonstrate that a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector is deterministically controllable by bright illumination. We found that bright light can temporarily make a large fraction of the nanowire length normally conductive, can extend deadtime after a normal photon detection, and can cause a hotspot formation during the deadtime with a highly nonlinear sensitivity. A...
